Crash Guide: Quick Ways to Diagnose and Fix Common System Crashes

If your computer freezes, a program closes unexpectedly, or you see a blue screen, you’re dealing with a crash. Crashes waste time and can cause data loss, but most of them can be handled without calling a specialist. Below you’ll find plain, step‑by‑step advice that works for Windows and Linux desktops, plus a few tips for servers.

Why Crashes Happen

Most crashes boil down to three causes: hardware strain, software conflicts, and corrupted data. Overheating components or a failing hard drive will trigger sudden shutdowns. When two programs try to use the same system file, the operating system can’t decide which one wins, and it throws an error. Corrupted system files or bad updates also confuse the OS, leading to a freeze or blue screen.

Knowing the root cause helps you pick the right fix. If the crash occurs only after a heavy game, heat is likely the culprit. If it happens whenever you open a specific app, the problem is probably a software conflict. And if it appears after a Windows update, corrupted files might be to blame.

Step‑by‑Step Fixes

1. Check temperatures. Open your task manager or a free tool like HWMonitor. If CPU or GPU temps stay above 85 °C, clean dust from fans, reapply thermal paste, or improve case airflow.

2. Run built‑in diagnostics. Windows users can type sfc /scannow in an admin Command Prompt to repair system files. Linux users can run fsck on unmounted partitions. These commands replace missing or corrupted files without reinstalling the OS.

3. Update drivers. Outdated graphics or network drivers often cause crashes after a new OS patch. Visit the device manufacturer’s site, download the latest version, and install it. Keep a backup of the old driver in case the new one brings new issues.

4. Scan for malware. A hidden virus can corrupt memory or overload resources. Use a reputable scanner like Malwarebytes, run a full scan, and delete any threats found.

5. Test hardware. Use tools such as MemTest86 for RAM and CrystalDiskInfo for drives. Faulty RAM shows up as random freezes, while a failing SSD will trigger read/write errors that cause programs to crash.

6. Review recent changes. If the crash started after installing a new app or update, uninstall it first. Windows’ “View installed updates” list lets you roll back problematic patches.

7. Backup and restore. When all else fails, restore the system to a point before the crash started. Create regular backups so you can recover files if a crash leads to data loss.

These steps cover most everyday crashes you’ll see on a typical office computer. For server‑grade environments, add monitoring tools like Nagios or Zabbix to catch resource spikes before they cause downtime.

Remember, the faster you act after a crash, the less data you lose. Keep a simple checklist handy, run regular maintenance, and you’ll spend far less time staring at error screens.

Why did the Air India Express aeroplane crash in Kerala?

Air India Express Flight 1344, an international commercial flight from Dubai to Calicut, India, crashed on August 7, 2020, while attempting to land at Calicut International Airport. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, failed to stop in time and overran the runway, resulting in a major crash. The aircraft split into two and caught fire, killing 18 people and injuring many more. The cause of the accident is currently being investigated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, India, although initial reports suggest that the aircraft's attempted landing in heavy rain and gusty winds may have been a factor. In the wake of the crash, India's Civil Aviation Minister has ordered a review of runway safety measures at airports across India.
